This course applies clinical concepts using neurofeedback, a field developed over more than 30 years. Neurofeedback 101 provides foundational, practical principles for understanding brain function and applying training techniques. The material presented is based on a wide body of knowledge from professionals including psychologists, neurophysiologists, psychiatrists, neurologists, and others.
Throughout the course, we emphasize the limitations of current data, the variability of individual brain responses, and the challenges in interpreting symptoms and selecting protocols. Multiple training approaches are discussed, as well as the ongoing debates within the field.
While neurofeedback has a long history of clinical use, effectiveness is not always easily defined or compared. We review assessment tools that may help guide training decisions. When used appropriately, within professional scope and ethical guidelines, neurofeedback is considered safe. The equipment discussed and databases referenced are FDA-cleared, but must be used by trained professionals.
Licensed professionals are responsible for practicing within their legal scope and professional standards. Course materials are proprietary and may not be distributed without written consent from Center for Brain.
This course is introductory and does not cover all aspects of neurofeedback. Ongoing learning is expected. Neurofeedback measures EEG activity and provides feedback to the brain; any effects are the result of the brain’s response to that feedback.
Please notify the instructor of any unusual or undesirable responses. Effects are generally short-lived. Medications should not be changed without consulting your physician.
